Martin and Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson (my personal favourite) would have been better choices. Maybe the other two finalists, too, only that I haven't read them.

I strongly suspect that Pottermania was what pushed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire over the edge. Because it seems everybody was reading and enjoying Harry Potter around the release of Goblet of Fire, including a lot of people who were not really the target audience. And in those days before the Hugo voter packet, it's quite possible that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was simply the most read book on the whole ballot and that enough people liked it to vote for it.Cora Buhlerthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03868233120931184399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9022769091032248225.post-68040604121804199512017-10-25T11:58:50.076-06:002017-10-25T11:58:50.076-06:00Oh! Jenkins (6/16/96-6/8/75) who published science fiction as Murray Leinster. You aren't the first to confuse the two. When Leinster was the Guest of Honor at Discon 1 in 1963, the hotel accidentally tried to give his complementary room to the fannish Jenkins who you meant to refer to above.shsilverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14795917341695138709noreply@blogger.com
